Current Electricity
This unit looks at the current electricity and circuit analysis
At the end of the unit you should be able to:
Resources
Student Formula Sheet blank graph paper
Worksheets
You may want to see the Physics 11 current electricity page for some review
P12 U8 Worksheet #1 P12 U8 Worksheet #1 solutions
P12 U8 Worksheet #2 P12 U8 Worksheet #2 solutions
P12 U8 Worksheet #3 P12 U8 Worksheet #3 solutions
Labs
You will be setting up a number of circuits using batteries, bulbs, wires, switches, and resistors. You will be using voltmeters and ammeters to measure quantities within the circuit.
Video examples - links will take you to video posted on vimeo
Circuits #1 - Ohm's Law basic
Circuits #2 - Intro Kirchoff Loop rule
Circuits #3 - Total resistance
Circuits #4 - Kirchoff loop rule
Complex Circuit analysis #1 (12mins, 6 steps)
Current direction
At the end of the unit you should be able to:
- calculate the current in a circuit using Ohms Law
- calculate the power that a circuit element (like a resistor) consumes
- calculate the total resistance of series, parallel, and combination circuits
- apply Kirchoffs Loop and Junction laws to calculate voltage and current in complex circuits
- trouble shoot basic DC electrical circuits that you need assemble
- describe what fuses and circuit breakers do and why we use them
